This all ages workshop is a drop-in event, as long as supplies last. Led by Busy Beaver’s own Carrie Vinarsky.
Alternative Pamphlets // 12:00-1:30 (Room 211, 2nd Floor)
*This is a hands-on workshop that you can drop in on throughout the workshop time*
This hands-on workshop will introduce variations on the basic zine structure – the pamphlet. We will learn alternative book structures, binding techniques, cover attachments, and closures. The workshop will emphasize methods that can be done at home with minimal equipment, and demonstrate how easy fundamentals can be expanded upon to create zines that stand out from the crowd.
The People’s Library // 12-1pm (Gallery, 2nd Floor)
Meet Richmond, VA’s People’s Librarians and learn about how they’re working to transform discarded books into a new type of library designed, built, and authored by community members. We’ll take a tour of their installation (featured in Columbia College’s Center for Book and Paper Arts exhibit: Social Paper) and work together to discuss how the methods utilized in the project could evolve to produce similar projects across the country. Help us explore and propose ways that creative labor can reimagine how we engage with each other, with the production of history, and our public institutions. A special set of handmade journals will be at the fest for individuals to fill; after the fest, these will be exhibited at Columbia’s Library for any to read. Come include your stories!
Zines, Punk, & Reclamation: A Discussion for People of Color // 12:30-2pm (Film Row Lecture Hall, 8th Floor)
How are zines an aid in the reclamation of our cultural and expressive practices, histories and identities as people of color, both in and out of punk cultures? What forms do those acts of reclamation take? How do we hold cultural and chosen communities together, or not? How do we navigate the clashes and the connections between them? This open discussion will be facilitated by Osa Atoe of Shotgun Seamstress zine. Also present will be Nyky Gomez (Brown Recluse Distro), Yumii Okafor (Slash Em Up zine), Mimi Nguyen (Race Riot, Slander zines), Suzy X (Malcriada, Mallgoth Chronicles zines) and Anna Vo (Fix My Head zine).
Beyond Poop and Puberty: The Politics of Parenting Zines // 1:30-2:30pm (Workshop Room 2, 8th Floor)
A discussion with Tomas Moniz, Jonas, and Dustin Seelinger about the history of parenting zines, the practicalities of sharing stories about family, and the possibilities of building radical community.

Brown and Proud Press is a writing collective of people of color that believes in the necessity of self-preservation and creating visibility around our struggles and histories through the medium of zines. Our main project, the “On Struggling” zine series, brings together personal narratives on topics such as identity, assimilation, racism, and self-care. This panel will highlight the formation of Brown & Proud Press, navigating and unapologetically occupying white spaces as performers and cultural workers, and how it’s being used as a platform to help Black and Brown youth in our communities own, speak, and share their rich lineages of storytelling and survival.

Stop by the letterpress studio and combine stencils and low-relief collages with letterpress printing to make your own accordion book. Pressure printing creates textural images reminiscent of rubbings and collagraphs that can used to produce one-of-a-kind print or complete editioned books. Work collectively to create and experiment with a variety of stencils, pull some prints, and finally fold into your own mini book.
